The Department
of Botany was established in 1963 as it was firstly established as the
Department of Biology. From the very initial days of its establishment,
it has been able to attract the best students of the country. Students
securing topmost merit positions in the legendary admission test of
then Jagannath College opt for studies in science with biology. At the
very beginning, the department offered B. Sc and M. Sc. degree in Botany.
The honors graduation course started at 1978 whereas masters in 1983-84
under Dhaka University. The undergraduate and post graduate program
started in 1975. The Jagannath College introduced evening shift in 1992
and continued academic program both day and evening shift firstly under
Dhaka University and then National University. These two sections merged
in single section in February, 2006 when the college was transformed
into the Jagannath University in 2005. The semester system was started
in 2006 with 80 students. Currently more than 1000 students in different
year and semester are studying in this department under the guidance
of 15 learned faculty members.
Over the
years, this ever-flourishing department has been served quality education,
scholarly guidance and leadership skills that have resulted in a number
of highly qualified and skilled Botany graduates, proving their potentiality
in home and abroad. With brilliant students and an amicable teacher-student
interaction- the department has become a unique one in its field.
The Department
of Botany is located on the north wing of the first and second floors
of the science building, 9-10 Chittaranjan Avenue, Shadarghat, Dhaka-1100,
Bangladesh. The classrooms occupy the first and second floors whereas
the laboratories, seminar, office, teacher’s room and chairman’s
office are located on the second floor only.
The Department
of Botany offers the degrees of B. Sc and M. Sc. B. Sc degree
is a 4 years program under semester system and M. Sc degree is a one
year program. The courses and syllabus followed by this
department for the above degrees are the most modern. The syllabus is
so designed as to contain all the necessary study materials so that
a graduate can face the botanical problem readily after graduation.
The teachers of the department meet periodically to review the courses
and their contents; necessary changes are made to update the needs.
The research works carried out by the teachers of the department in the last few years is diversified in nature. Some teachers are doing their research works with the collaboration of the faculty members of different reputed universities. Some are engaged in their Ph. D program. The faculty members have a good number of publications in international/national conference and journals. It includes research on taxonomy, hydrobiology, ecology, biodiversity, medicinal plants etc. The research works are not only of academic interest, but also aim at improving the natural production, socio-economic conditions and environmental issues of Bangladesh by implementing the results.
The laboratory facilities of the department are improving day by day. Six modern laboratories are going to be established - Phycology and Limnology laboratory, Microbiology and Plant Pathology laboratory, Cytology & Cytogenetics laboratory, Biotechnology and Tissue culture laboratory, Plant physiology and Bio-chemistry laboratory, Genetics and Breeding laboratory.
A
small but rich library has been established in the department. It has
currently more than 2000 books and a lot of journals. The library is
being enriched day by day. Books related to the field of study and research
can also be found at the central library of Jagannath University.
Students of
this department have achieved success in co-curricular activities like
wall paper writing, scouting and BNCC program.
