Welcome to Jagannath University Chemistry Department

Chairman :: Professor Dr. Md. Nuruddin Ahmed

Jagannath University, a duly famous and celebrated educational institution of the sub-continent, was established as Jagannath College in the year 1884 and was nationalized in 1968. In October 2005, it has been recognized as full-fledged public university with the name of Jagannath University, Dhaka. One of the rich and lucrative Departments of the Science faculty of this university is the Chemistry Department. It is located on the 1st floor of the four-storied Science building, which is adjacent to the register building. Prof. Dr. Md. Nuruddin Ahmed is the first Chairman of this Department. Earlier, Chemistry was taught here in the H.S.C and Bachelor level only. However, in the year 1973 it witnessed the introduction of B.Sc (Hons) course, which was followed by the introduction of Master’s (Final Part) shortly afterwards. In the Master’s (Final Part) there are Thesis and Non-Thesis groups.

It is undoubtedly a rare fortune for a student of a newly established university to conduct a research works in collaboration with esteemed organizations Like Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET); Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) and Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) However, the students of the Thesis group are conducting various research works with BUET, BCSIR and AEC under the supervision of highly experienced teachers of this department. Moreover, some of our potential and industrious students have already brought glory to our institution significantly by securing outstanding results. Apart from these the students of the Non-Thesis group are ceaselessly attending practical classes in our laboratories.

Professor Mukarram Hussain Khundker was a brilliant product of this Department. He did his Ph.D. from the University of Durham in England and returned home in early 1948 to serve his own alma mater. Dr Khundker joined to the University of Dhaka in Chemistry Department as Reader in the same year. Professor Khundker was a dedicated teacher and researcher. His contributions to various fields of chemistry included modification of cellulose and jute, electrochemistry, metal sulphides, non-metallic sulphur compounds, inorganic borates, organo-boron compounds, mineral processing, and analytical Chemistry. Professor Khundker excellent in research and he was awarded the Pakistan Academy of Sciences Gold Medal for research in the Physical sciences. Professor Khundker was appointed as the Head of the Department of Chemistry of Dhaka university in 1954 and continued to be the Head of the Department of Chemistry until his premature death on 30th November 1972.

Eminent educationalist Hari Prasanna Roy (H.P. Roy Gold Medal was awarded after his name) was head of the department of this department afterwards he was appointed as a vice Principal of this institute. Professor Jogesh Chandra Ghosh who has a great contribution on Herbal medicine was also Head of this Department and then he was appointed as a Principal of this institute. Furthermore he established Herbal medicine industry called Sadana Oshadhalaya Ltd. which is very popular in Bangladesh

As an integral part of the curriculum our students are very often taken to various heavy chemical industries as a part of industrial tour under the supervision of concern teacher. The purpose of these inspections and excursions is to guide the students beyond the small perimeter of laboratories. In order to maintain good advancement of knowledge several activities like Tutorials, In-course exams, are regularly been arranged. This department has also made its presence strongly in the field of Scouting, BNCC, Sports and various Cultural Programs. We are all committed to enhance and glorify the department, which is full of enthusiasms and life. We heartily welcome all to take part in this noble enterprise.

Faculty members :

There are 17 teachers in the Department of Chemistry. Among them there are 2 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors and 10 Lecturers. Of the total number of teachers 4 are Ph.D. degree holders. Of the total number of 17 teachers 3 are women

Number of students and Degrees offered:

The Department of Chemistry runs courses for the B.Sc. Honors, and M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry. The B.Sc. honors courses in Chemistry will be completed within four year in 8 (eight) semester. Each academic year will be divided in two semesters each of which of 6(six) months duration. The subjects (major and related) which will be included in 8 (eight) semesters is compulsory for the students. The marks for each unit (3 credit) are distributed like 60% for semester final, 30% for Mid term/ Quiz, 10% for Class attendance. Besides it caters for the minor courses in Chemistry for the various Departments under the Faculties of Science. There are about 1000 students (including minor) in this Department.
