English Department at a glance 

The English Department of Jagannath University has a glorious heritage. It is one of the oldest departments in the then Jagannath College and has flourished a sparkling result and galaxy of stars including Dr. Jotirmoy Guhathakurta, Professor Munier Chowdhury, Professor B.C Roy, Dr. Serajul Islam Chowdhury and so on. The department started its function from 7^th July, 1936, chaired by Professor Prafullanath Roy. Others were Sailendranath Bhadra, Manindra Mohan Chakravarty, Syed Nurul Haque etc.  

At present, the department offers semester system graduation of 8 semesters having 128 credits as per international standard. The objective of a Four Year B.A (Honours) English Programme is to provide the students with sound and up-dated foundation in English Language and Literature. The courses have been designed to ignite the students with knowledge for the modern world. Thus the department is offering Traditional Grammar, Advanced Grammar, Theory of Literature, Rhetoric and Prosody, Phonetics and Phonology, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), ELT and Linguistics, Literature of all ages, Research Methodology, Testing and Evaluation, Critical Theory, Practical Criticism, Classics in Translation, Commonwealth Literature, American Literature, Modern Literature etc. The students will also have the opportunity to acquire knowledge from interdisciplinary subjects to adjust the world facing multidimensional issues. The department has topped the list in the colleges affiliated in National University for successive three years 2001, 2002 and 2003 (around 170 second class in each year). To expand the intellectual horizon of the students, the department has started a Debating and Language Club.
