History of The Department of History  

 

1.  Short Scenario of History Department: 

History Department, University of Jagannath, Dhaka is one of the notable Department of Arts Faculty. Since the Nationalization of Jagannath Collage in 1968, History was the study in Intermediate and Degree courses .In the Year 1995, Honours course in History Department  was started by the combined efforts of the teachers of History Department. During that time, only 4 Post were existed in the Subject but it was increased up to 7 posts in 1997. 

      Presently, History Department is unquestionably a rich Department. Now the posts are increased to 14 ( Please, Appendix...... ). At Present experienced, skilled, research oriented and highly qualified teachers are serving in the Department. 

      Now a days, Semester system and Course system are continuing. Total number of students in both the Semester system and Course system are 737 ( Please, Appendix...... ). 

      Despite of some infrastructural limitation, the Honorable Chairman of the Department has arranged separate rooms, one for the  Honorable  Chairman, one for the Teaching Staff and one for the Senior Teachers. These rooms are properly used for official work, academic discussion and other departmental activities. 

      There is a resourceful Seminar Library in the department. Relevant Syllabus recommended and rare books are preserved here. Total number of books is around      2,000 (Two Thousand). 

      The Seminar Library is being arranged by the Special Management. The departmental teachers (by Rotation) are in charge of seminar Library. Books are issued to the Students in a scheduled manner. 
 

Even the departmental teachers (by Rotation) are also ensuring the performance needed for students in the examination and their attendance in the classes (Please, Appendix...... ). 

      Study tour which ensures students to visit Historical places for observation of architecture and archival materials is an important ingredient of History Department. Every Year, this kind of study tour has been arranged by the Department not only in Bangladesh but also in India. 

      Most remarkable events of the Department are to arrange regularly "International History Seminar" since 2003. A large number of participants came from various Universities and Colleges in Bangladesh as well as from abroad. Specially this year (2007) is very remarkable. It is the joint effort of two Departments  namely, History and Islamic History & Culture. The Seminar was highly patronized by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Sirajul Islam Khan, University of Jagannath, Dhaka. The   Honorable Chairman of UGC, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam was the chief guest. Historian Professor Dr. Sirajul Islam was the Special guest. Moreover, Honorable Treasurer of Jagannath University Professor Dr. Abu Hossain Siddique was present as special guest. 

      Learned Scholars, Researchers and writers from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh participated in the Seminar and presented the articles.  The seminar was successfully ended with aim and objects. 

      Lastly, the teachers of History Department are firmly committed  to dedicate themselves for the better results of the students by their painful and combined efforts and even try to ensure to establish the international standard of  education in the Department.
