History of The Department Of Islamic History And Culture

From To-day
Jagannath the very old Educational Institution has passed 125 years
maintaing its history and heritage. Now it is transformed in a full
fledged University crossing various directions with unpredictable volatility.
Zamindar Babu Kishori Lal Chowdhury of Manikgonj at Balihati, Shaturia,
established Jagannath College,on the 4th July 1884, in the
name of his father Late Jagannath Roy Chowdhury.
From the very
beginning the Students & Teachers of Jagannath College played a
very positive role in the national issues: - ie
--1905 – During partition of Bengal.
--1948-1952- Language Movement.
--Movement of Education 1962, 1966 (6-Point Movement)
--Uprising of 1969, Liberation
Movement of 1971 etc.
Rendering positive
role in Socio-Political and Cultural domain and involving all movements
for democracy Jagannath College always showed its secular nature. On
the other hand, the then Government and dictators and reactionary groups
always had been very alert to suppress the progressive movements organized
by the Student of Jaganath College and the teachers played very positive
role of intelligentsia.
It was with
this end in view Monem Khan, the then Governor of East Pakistan Promulgated
an order to convert Jagannath College into Government College in 1stAugust
1968. As a protest against this provincialization the famous Educationist
and Cultural personality Professor Ajit Guhah resigned from the job.
In 1995 Declaration
of University was passed. On 20th October 2005, University
Regulation was passed and at present it is running as a full fledged
University. Last Principal of Govt. Jagannath College was Professor.
Ayesha Shirin Rahman. First Vice-Chancellor of Jagannth University is
Professor. Dr. Shirajul Islam Khan. Under his efficient Leadership University
is flourishing day by day towards modernization. Number of new disciplines
have opened and also appointed new teachers and staffs.
Islamic History
and Culture is the biggest and famous Department under the Faculty of
Arts for its multifarious activities. Information of this Department
is furnished here below:-

Islamic History & Culture.
Department
of Islamic History and Culture has its glorious past. Out of historical
demand the Department was established in the later part of 1940 first
in Calcatta University and then it was opened in Dhaka University in
1949. Famous historian Prof. Dr. A.B.M. Habibullah founded this Department
in Dhaka University in 1949. From the very beginning of its foundation
Department of Islamic History & culture was opened in Jagannath
college & the course was taught in the Intermediate level.
From 1972 Islamic
History & Culture was teaching both in Intermediate and the degree
level in the Day Section and MA I, MA II in the Night section. Discipline
attracted large number of Students. After 1985 honours Course was offered
firstly in the Day section. Honours and Pass Course was taught in the
Day section. Number of student increasing very rapidly & it was
from 1985-1996 number of students increasing in the department of Islamic
Hitosy & culture very rapidly and it was from 1985-1996 number of
students has became nearly more than five thousands. From the very beginning
some renowned scholars and historians teach Courses in this Department.
Some of them played very important role in the time of National demand
like Political cultural and language movements. After the abolition
of Government Jagannath College in 2005 and University Regulation was
passed & implemented. Professor Syeda Selina Begum Join as Chairman
in Evening section in 2005. Sajeda Yusuf Assistant Professor was the
Chairman of Day section. In 2006 Professor Syeda Selina Begum transferred
from Jagannath University to Eden College. Two sections ie Day and Night
was merged the department has expanded in new dimension. The Authority
of Jagannath University assigned Jahan Ara Begum the responsibility
of Chairmanship in this department in 2006. She is trying her best with
her colleagues and staff to run the department smoothly and peacefully
and also to enhance the quality of teaching.
Methods of teaching: -
Class lecture,
Participatory method, Short Quiz, Project, Viva voce, Class attendance,
Map, Globe, Display the picture of historical importance with Projector.
Education Tour in Bangladesh and SAARC countries.

Every year
Department Celebrates Ending ceremony for Masters Final year assembling
Students, previous Chairman’s, Teachers, Chief Guest from Institution
or outstanding person from out side.
--Wall-Magazines,
Departmental seminars, work shops, cultural functions, some student’s
involve in BNCC and Rovers Scout, guardian’s day etc.
International Conference: -
International conference on History & Heritage jointly organized by the Department of Islamic History & culture and the department of History. Large number of renowned Scholars and historians from Home and Abroad (India, Pakistan, and London) join every year since 2003.
Poor and Meritorious
Students are encouraged with financial help. Staff if fall financial
hardship get small amount of monitory help.
Infrastructure: -
Infrastructure is not good enough, though a bit change. Seminar room, library, office room, teacher’s room, office room of the departmental Chairman will be centrally reformed within a very short time with modern setting.
Seminar Library:-
Seminar library
is rich with authentic books, modern journals, documentary papers, magazines,
bulletin etc.The library contain three thousand books. Syllabus has
been prepared according to semester system with modern thought and idea.
Authority sanctions money to purchase books for library development.
