Philosophy is one of
the most prestigious and intellectually pursuits of knowledge. From
its very inception as Jagannath college in 1910, therefore, together
with a few subjects like Sanskrit and English, Philosophy was included
as BA in Philosophy in academic program, and, this is to be noted that
Jagannath college at that time was the only educational institution
that created the opportunity for higher study in the then East Bengal.
Honors course in Philosophy was first introduced in the academic year
1974-1975 whilst MA in 1990-1991. In course of time, the department
of Philosophy is now established under Arts and Social Science Faculty
on a sound footing with a dynamic academic program, managed by a number
of qualified and experienced teachers for competent teaching to the
students. All the teachers are dedicated to make the department a centre
of Excellence in Philosophy in Bangladesh.
General Information:
Department offices, lecture
halls, seminar hall etc are housed on the topmost floor in the five-storied
Arts building, erected in the University campus with a wonderful natural
environment. All the rooms are well ventilated and well equipped with
a view to create perfect academic atmosphere.
Academic Program:
The department, at present, offers 4 years undergraduate program leading to Honors degree through semester system. This 4 years course (Bachelor of Arts) comprises 8 semesters with 2 in each academic year (session).
A student will have to complete 120 credit hours in this 8 semesters or in other words, he/she will have to complete 45 credits (each credit consists of 15 lectures/classes including one hour as class test) in each semester. All the courses are compulsory.
The semester system was introduced in 2005-2006 academic year. Currently 2 batches are studying in honors courses through this system.
Apart from honors course, 1 year Master degree program has also been in operation through course system before 2005-2006 academic year; however, following completion of this course 1 year Master study through semester system is planned to be introduced in near future.
Besides, the department offers RS (Related Subject) in Philosophy for students enrolled in other discipline of this University.
Right now, about 800
students are studying in both Honors and Master programs in different
academic year. The number of seats under 2007-2008 academic year has
been fixed up as 100 for Philosophy department.
Admission Requirements:
The principal requirement
for admission to undergraduate level course (Honors degree) is H.S.C
or equivalent degree. Academic council recommended GPA 5.5 for admission
in 1st year Honors for academic year 2007-2008. A student
having this eligibility will have to face admission test for final selection
in the department.
Teaching Strength:
The department has, at present, 4 numbers of qualified and experienced Associate Professors and an equal number of Assistant professors and 6 more competent lecturers for professional teaching to their students so that they can achieve necessary skills for jobs in the related fields and/or complete successfully higher studies in Philosophy at home and abroad. The department is provided with logistic supports by other non-teaching staff in order to ensure smooth running of academic program at all stages.

Seminar Library:
The department has a rich Seminar Library containing about 2000 books on Philosophy or related subjects.
Both teachers and students
have free access to this library to enhance their knowledge.
Stipends:
The meritorious and poor
students of this department are offered stipend from the central fund
of the University.
Social, Cultural and
other activities:
During the 4/5 year course,
social and cultural evenings are organized with the participation of
students. Sports are also held regularly. Excursions, organized by the
Department also take place at a convenient time without affecting the
normal study of the students.
