History of The Department of Physics

Physics is a core Department of Jagannath University, Dhaka. The Department hopes that it will very soon gather momentum to reach the international standard in contributing to the national development related to industry, education, communication, business and information technology.

One hundred and twenty one years ago, Physics as a subject was introduced to the Govt. Jagannath College in 1884. In those days it was taught to the intermediate and degree classes. Later on in the 1970s it was introduced to the post graduate classes. During that period there were Evening and Day Shifts: M. Sc First Part was taught in the Evening Shift and M. Sc Final Part was taken up by the Day Shift. B. Sc (Hons.) in Physics was introduced in 1972 and in 2001 respectively in the Day and Evening Shifts. The two Shifts of the Department have been merged to a single Department on 18 May, 2006.

As many as 1040 students have been enrolled to the different  classes of the Department taught by 19 teachers in different positions. Some of the students completed thesis paper on solar energy in the M. Sc class and came out with brilliant results. Some others of the same class have been continuing as thesis students on the same field. The results of the students of this department have always been glorious. The following chart shows the past results of the Department:

The existing faculty members have been working sincerely as a team under the Chairmanship of Professor Dr. Md. Humayun Khan to achieve the cherish goal of the Department. All of them are adequate qualified, innovative and committed to academic perfection. The information of the faculty members is given bellow.
