History of The Department
of Sociology at a Glance
Brief History:
Department
of Sociology is a large and an important department within the faculty
of Social Science of the Jagannath University.
This department
started in 1964 when the Jagannath College was a private college. From
1964 to 1986 sociology was taught in the Higher Secondary and Degree
pass course levels. In the year 1968 when the evening shift was introduced,
the department was in operation both in the evening and day shift of
the college. Then in the Higher Secondary and Degree pass course sociology
was taught in both the shifts. It is to be mention that on July 01,
1968 Jagannath College became a government college of the then East
Pakistan.
In the
year 1968 Master’s (Preliminary) course and in 1988 Master’s (Final)
course was introduced under the University of Dhaka. From 1992 Honour’s
course was introduced under the National University. After introducing
both Honour’s and Master’s courses, number of students were increasing
every year and the department became one of the largest department in
the college.
On October
2, 2005 in an ordinance passed by the then Government of Bangladesh,
the Government Jagannath College became a University. On February 08,
2006 the day and evening shifts of the department were merged for the
better administrative purpose.
The name
of the heads of department who were working sincerely in the Jagannath
College are: Professor Dr. Bazlul Mobin Chowdhuty(At present Vice-Chancellor-Independent
University of Bangladesh, Dhaka), Professor Abul Hasan, Mr. Fazlul Haque
Khan, Professor Mia Mohammad Idris, Professor Amir Hossain Mia, Professor
Sultana Begum and Husne Ara.
After
becoming Jagannath University, the Chairmen of the department are:
Professor Sultana Begum, Professor Husne Ara and
Teaching Staffs:
At present
there are three Professors, four Associate Professors, two Assistant
Professors and four Lecturers.
Office Staffs:
There are
one Office Secretary and two MLSS.
Seminar:
There is
a seminar in the department. It has a large room and nearly 3200 books
which include reference, Journal etc. are available in the seminar.
Semester
system was introduced in the department from 2005-2006 academic sessions
in the honour’s course. There are two batches studying in the semester
system.
The department
has very up-dated and modern syllabus for the semester system honours
course.
The department
has an efficient and experienced teaching staffs. The list of the teachers
