HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

OF JAGANNATH UNIVERSITY 
 
 

The history of Jagannath University is as old is history of Dhaka. Though there exists no authentic records so far as the foundation, yet available contemporary documents witnessed. 
 

The University was established in 1868 as “Jagannath School” by Babu Kishori Lal Roy Chowdhury, a benevolent educationist and then Zamindar of Manikgonj in the name of his father Jagannath Roy Chowdhury with a view to disseminating education in the neighborhood. With the passage of time the School was transformed to College in 1884 and until recently the College was declared as full fledged University a on 20^th October’ 2005 by the Govt. Professor Dr. Sirajul Islam Khan was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of The University. 
 

Science subjects used to be taught in this institution since 1910. Zoology as an independent subject started its journey in 1963 headed by Professor Mohibullah. Past records speak that Zoology was taught as a part of Biology since then. Dr. D. S. Islam was the first Chairman of Zoology in 1963 to 1968. After him the renowned scholar & author Professor Amorandra Narayan Chowdhury, Chairman & continued up to 1970. After departure of Professor Dr. Q. A.T.M. Habibur Rahman was appointed as Chairman who successfully headed the department until he took over the office of the Principal in 1989. Honours Courses & Master Courses in Zoology was introduced in 1972 - 73 session & 1980 respectively. In the growing demand of higher education the college authority decided to offer educational facilities to the elderly & job holders in night shift and accordingly opened preliminary course in 1984. Initially the College was affiliated with Calcutta University and later with Dhaka University when it came into existence in 1921 and subsequently under National University of Bangladesh until it became a full fledged University in 2005.  
 

Among the extra curriculum activities the most important achievement of the department is the publication of an international standard journal in 1986 under supervision of Dr. Meher-E-Khoda in the name of “Journal of Zoology” which as acclaimed by many scholars. The department is proud of having the under mentioned scholars during her long academic period whose relentless efforts & versatile contribution enriched the departments in nation building. Biswas; Dr. Ayesha Khatun; Mrs. Ashrafunessa; Mr. Abdur Rashid Akhand; Professor Tahmina Begum; Professor Anwar Malik; Professor Dr. Azizun Nahar; Professor Fazlul Haq Mollah; Mr. Azizul Haq Khan; Professor Gul Rukh Haq; Professor Begum Nilufar; Mrs. Gul-e-Jannat. Initially the department runs as day & evening shift headed by Professor Begum Nilufar & Professor Gul Rukh Haq. 
 

It is to be mentioned here that Professor Gul Rukh Haq became the first Chairman of the department on according to the seniority being declared university who very recently proceeded to retirement. The current Chairman Professor Begum Nilufar took over the charges of the department form Professor Haq & heads the department very smoothly. Last but not the least, the department has been offering qualitative education to their students by virtue of which they are fit enough to compete in Govt. & Non Governmental job markets and successfully achieving their goals.
